Bullrun Rock is one of three glacially carved peaks we’ll be visiting in the Monument Rock Wilderness.

Backpacking Trip
June 21-23, 2012

This year’s 3-day expedition into Eastern Oregon’s Monument Rock Wilderness is near the headwaters of the Malheur River.

Bullrun Rock, Monument Rock and Table Rock are each situated in high elevation alpine meadows with scattered Douglas and Subalpine Fir. Although lacking the elevation and prominence of nearby mountains, this is one of the more enjoyable areas to explore in the Southern Blue Mountains and is scarcely visited lending to a true feeling of isolation.

If you want to go, fill out a medical release form for the 2012-2013 school year, and get it back to Eric by Friday, June 15, in order to reserve your spot. We have room on the trip for up to 16 high school students. The cost is $50. Download the packing list.

Wednesday, June 20 — Meet at the Youth House from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Bring everything you plan to take on the trip. We will check packs, distribute food and tents, and finalize what is and isn’t going. Dinner provided.

Thursday, June 21 — Leave the church at 6 a.m. Arrive at the trailhead around 1 p.m., enjoy lunch, and hike about 4-1/2 miles to our campsite.

Friday, June 22 — After a leisurely breakfast, options will include day hikes to any of the nearby rocks. We also won’t be far from Elk Creek and the Little Malheur River.

Saturday, June 23 — We’ll clean up camp and head back to the trailhead. We’ll plan to be back to the church by 8:30 p.m.
