YCLS - Youth Challenged through Local Service is a short-term inner city mission for youth, in partnership with BridgeTown Ministries. This experience takes youth into some of the neediest areas of Portland to serve those who have been marginalized by our society today.

Application deadline is May 1, 2012.

Dates:  June 20-26 in Portland, Oregon and Youth Yearly Meeting at George Fox University, July 24-29, 2011.

The program cost is $550 to cover both the cost of the YCLS program and the week of Youth Yearly Meeting (all lodging and meals included).  Application deadline is May 1, 2012.

There is also a need for two adult team leaders to volunteer during the week of YCLS.  These leaders will work alongside BridgeTown ministries and the YCLS team members during this important week in Portland, Oregon.

The one week summer service experience in Portland is for those in high school. Contact Rachelle Staley, Associate Superintendent of Youth and Young Adults, if you have questions about being a leader or team member, Rachelle@nwfriends.org or 503/476-9127.

YCEW 2012

Applications are due by December 1.

  • When: June 27th-July 29th
  • Where: Haiti
  • Who: High school sophomores, juniors or seniors for the 2011-2012 school year
  • What: This year we will be working with an organization called Haiti Christian Development Fund (HCDF). This group is working on various projects including the building and development of a boarding school for secondary students.

Our YCEW team will be working alongside the Haitian people developing relationships and community as they work to complete this important project. Education is typically only available in the city and the urban conditions are dismal (even before the earthquake). HCDF is working to promote better education opportunities in rural Haiti.

Click here for more information on this great ministry: Haiti Christian Development Fund

The team will also be connecting with youth from local churches to learn from one another. It is our hope to host conversations and opportunities for the youth of Haiti to teach our youth what God is doing in Haiti and for the YCEW team to talk about what God is doing in their country and communities

Haiti is a small, tropical, mountainous country located in the Caribbean Sea where it shares an island with the Dominican Republic. Haiti is known for its unique history and culture. As one of the most densely populated countries in the world, most Haitians are of African Decent, but also have strong French roots. Due to previous political corruption and ongoing violence, Haiti is found to be the poorest country in the Americas while still struggling to recover from last year’s 7.0 earthquake that tore Haiti to ruins.

Some things to remember as you are praying about applying are that both YCEW team members and leaders must attend a Parent Meeting on January 8, 2012, May Retreat (May 4-6, 2012), and the YCEW trip (June 24-July 27, 2011) which includes orientation before and debriefing & Yearly Meeting sessions after. These dates are absolutely mandatory for acceptance. Blessings as you begin your journey.

NFC is hosting a screening of a new film that uses Isaiah 58 as its cue; a film that challenges Christians to respond to extreme poverty in our world.

This Friday night at 7 p.m. in the sanctuary, Michelle Akins has organized a gathering to watch “58:” You can find more information about the movie and the movement here. You can also contact Michelle for more information. Consider making time in the busyness of life for this opportunity!

The film might not be appropriate for young children. Child care will not be provided.
